This International Transgender Day of Visibility w This International Transgender Day of Visibility we are celebrating transgender people and acknowledging the amazing positive contributions they make to our society.
We honour Christine Burns MBE, an accomplished writer and British political activist known for her work with Press for Change and, more recently, as an internationally recognised health adviser.
Involved in the trans community for several decades, Christine is an activist, recognised with an MBE for her role fighting for transgender rights. She helped put together new employment legislation and the Gender Recognition Act and wrote the first ever official guidance about trans health for the Department of Health.
We would like to thank Christine for being a guest on our podcasts to talk about the progress which has been made and the work still to be done in securing equality for trans people. Her interview can be accessed on our website.

This International Transgender Day of Visibility w This International Transgender Day of Visibility we are celebrating transgender people and acknowledging the amazing positive contributions they make to our society. We honour Jay Stewart, who co-founded Gendered Intelligence, a trans-led charity, in 2008 to: - deliver trans youth programmes, which have become ONLINE in response to the Covid 19 Crisis, increasing the offer to support members of the community through these remote channels, and support for parents and carers; - provide professional development and trans awareness training for all sectors; and - run educational workshops for schools, colleges, universities and other educational settings.
Jay studied for his PhD in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths. His thesis “Trans on Telly: Popular Documentary and the Production of Transgender Knowledge” explored understandings of trans identities through mainstream televisual documentaries.
Jay has acted as an independent adviser to the Ministry of Justice review into the care and management of transgender offenders and given oral evidence to the Trans Inquiry for the Women’s and Equalities Select Committee. He now sits on the National Transgender Advisory Board for trans prisoners with the Ministry of Justice. Jay gained his doctorate and has a range of publications in the area of Trans Studies. Jay takes a selfie at the Trans and intersex takeover at the Tate, where he contributed as part of the #Queerandnow panel.
