Mental Health Matters

Welcome to our Autumn 2016 newsletter. Our focus this time is on mental health. We celebrated World Mental Health Day on 10th October and we wanted to share some information, ideas and stories with you about mental health. In the newsletter you will also find an update on our LGBTQ youth project in South Gloucestershire as well as all the latest news on our LGBT+ health research in Bristol.

We have features on a new support line from Bristol and Taunton Mind for the local Trans communities and an update from Bristol Independent Mental Health Network known as BIMHN.

You can read about the range of equality, diversity and inclusion training options we offer as well as our new course on Easy Read titled “Making Things Easy to Read and Understand”. This course also supports organisations to meet the new Accessible Information Standard from NHS England.

We have updates on local activity and walking projects, improving mental health through exercise, as well as a day in the life from Letty Anderson a networker from CASS, Community Access Support Service. As well as this there is also a feature on a day in the life from Ruth Arnold the hate crime caseworker at LGBTBristol.

There is a case study on a piece of work I have been involved in this year with South Gloucestershire Council on a Domestic Homicide Review and drug related death.

We have a review of Trans Pride South West, which took place in Bristol in September. As well as an article written by Helen Farmer on “fitting in”. There is a special feature on World Mental Health Day and a brand new Wellbeing College being led by our partners at Merlin Housing Society.

Hannah Jaine is back from HMP Ashfield to talk about her work on equality and diversity at the prison, this time with a feature on their Foreign National Forum. We also have a feature from Southern Brooks on their work on mental health and wellbeing.

We have upcoming event, so don’t forget to put this dates in your diary. This is our Easy Read course running in Bristol on Wednesday 2nd November, you can book tickets online via Eventbrite.
